The WSET 2 wine flashcard stack is growing every day. The stack on the left shows the blank cards waiting to be written out and added to the pile. Maybe it is a bit overboard for a 50 question exam, but 1) I want to cover as many possible questions as possible, and 2) the point of all this is to learn more and more and more. It’s the knowledge gained that counts the most. I want to do more than just past the exam — I want to absorb all I can. Not all heroes wear capes. Last night, sweet Gromit was cuddling and purring on my shoulder at about 2-am(ish). She suddenly perked up and looked toward the bedroom door and uttered a verrrrry low growl and flew to the door. I turned on the light and her tail had puffed up like a bottle brush. Nothing was on the other side of the bedroom door, but it is sweet to know that Gromit is so protective and would spring into action like that. We opened this awesome bottle tonight! Anthony and I both loved it! His sinuses go crazy batty with high tannin/full-bodied reds, so this was a perfect blend for him because the tannin is lower and the acidity is high, so it balances nicely. The red fruit flaromas (my word for flavors and aromas) of tart cranberry, pomegranate, and cherry are awesome, and the Grenache adds a lively kick of spice. I’ve loved everything I’ve ever tasted from Stolpman Vineyards and this was no exception! Purchased from The Wine Crush

Opened a 2019 Vaughn Duffy Pinot Noir out of Sonom

Opened a 2019 Vaughn Duffy Pinot Noir out of Sonoma County. Because I am in the midst of my study for the exam, I used the WSET Standard Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT) and for the first time, I rated a wine as outstanding for ticking off all the boxes. Balance…Length…Intensity…Complexity.

The ripe red cherry and strawberry flaromas (my word for flavor and aroma) balance the high acidity and the less than customary high alcohol content for a Pinot Nour at 14%. The long length emphasizes the desirable characteristics such as the fruity primary flaromas and the secondary oak-influenced aromas. The intensity of the flaromas are pronounced and highlight the primary, secondary, and tertiary — adding to complexity. With the 4 boxes ticked (Balance, Length, Intensity, and Complexity), and based upon my thoughts, I feel I can call this an outstanding wine!

We opened this awesome 2021 Morgan Riesling Santa Lucia Highlands from a recent @thewinecrush
Pale lemon with medium aroma intensity. Aromas of green apple, lime, peaches, and chamomile. I find this wine to be dry with medium+ acidity, medium body, and a medium finish showcasing the wine’s vibrant ripe fruit flavors that benefited from a late October harvest. Overall, I love it!

We recently opened the Cava Quintanilla Chardonnay

We recently opened the Cava Quintanilla Chardonnay Reserva 2020 from Mexico that we received as part of the @altabajamarket Alta Baja Wine Club. It is dry and refreshingly delicious with high acidity, medium body and aromas of soft peach and luscious gooey buttery bread. This wine was partially aged for 8 months in oak, providing a flavor of rich vanilla.
