WITF – Bland Frozen Waffles? Elevate them!

Introducing: What’s in the Fridge (WTIF)

Do you ever wake up on a sleepy Saturday morning (or Caturday in our home) and crave a piling plate of waffles, but you don’t have a waffle maker? I have a solution — spruce up some frozen waffles. It works, and it’s all about the toppings.

In my most recent Instacart order, my intent was to order 4 bananas because they seem to turn a spotty brown quickly in my kitchen, and I don’t eat giraffe print bananas. In my haste to complete the order, I inadvertently selected 4 bunches of bananas by mistake. Whoops!

What to do? What to do? My craving for a hearty plate of waffles solved my dilemma and sweetened-up my Caturday morning.

I grabbed several bananas, removed their snappy yellow jackets, and sliced the fruit into sections. I plopped a couple tablespoons of butter and sprinkled 3 tablespoons of brown sugar into my cast-iron skillet. As the butter melted, I added the bananas and sautéed them until they reached a pillowy consistency and brown sugar caramelized along with the fruit.

After toasting the frozen waffles, I added layer of the caramelized bananas to each waffle, creating a little waffle tower, snapped a pic (of course) and dug in.

The sweet banana and caramel sauce soaked into the waffles and provided a rich and hearty sweetness to these ordinarily bland little waffles.

The moral to this story? Pantry and refrigerator cooking with ordinary ingredients doesn’t have to be bland. We already have the tools we need on-hand in our kitchens to make ordinary food taste like it was chef-made. We just need to learn how to use those ingredients to our advantage.
