Tannat Tonight

I love trying new wines. (Well, new to me, that is.) Last night, I opened a bottle of Pisano Tannat — a variety I have never tried, but bought recently for my collection.

Tannat, while historically known in France, is now essentially a grape of choice in Uruguay. Tannat is well-known for its high tannins, and high tannins make Tannat a healthier wine to drink due to the tannin’s sexy little secret. High tannins mean high antioxidants! Awesome, right?

How did it taste? Tannat isn’t super-fruity to me by taste; however, the aroma of the Pisano Tannat carries scents of blackberry and plum along with fresh tobacco. The taste is slight black-fruit stone fruit (plum), cocoa, and spices. It is full-bodied with high tannins and medium acidity, so the combination of these structural components lends a nice balance to an already delicious wine. Keep in mind, though, that high tannins can be a little bit astringent regardless of balance by acidity.

With more tannic wines, I like to balance tannins by pairing the wine with a somewhat fattier dish like a marbled steak or cheesy meals. I paired the Pisano Tannat with a white cheddar snack. Because the tannins clung tighter to the cheese than to my mouth, the flavor-kick was phenom!! So, if you prefer tannic wines with a kick, this one is definitely for you. My rating? Check it out…
